A background check reveals that private databases contain erroneous information and state that I have a criminal conviction when I don’t even have an arrest (and I don’t have a conviction). How do you get the wrong information removed? What are the laws here?

Have you tried contacting whoever runs the database?

I would go to a local police station and get finger printed and have an FBI background check done. Costs $40 or so. Then take the results to whomever ran the background check and send a copy to the private agancy who has incorrect info on you.

Write that private database and tell them they are wrong, that you want a correction, that you want to know where they got that erroneous information. Sometimes they will check it out and apologize for an error one of their people picked up from some newspaper or something online and then they will remove it. Others will provide you with the name and address of the person or company who submitted that information and it’s up to you to contact them (contact them by letter and do it certified mail, return receipt). When you receive a good response then send that to the private database and ask them to change/correct their database and to send you a free copy to show that they have done so.
