Can an employer use a background check to find past jobs not listed on a resume?

If I omitted a few jobs will this be ok? Does the background check show all jobs I have held or do they just call up references I have listed?

the background checks done by most employers will not show any employment information.
there are companies that provide a more extensive background check but these are much more expensive then what most employers pay.
generally what you list as former jobs and references are what prospective employers go by………..of course there is always the chance that they will find out and could possibly terminate you for not listing these other employers (this is unlikely but it could happen if the jobs were relevant). if the application ask for ALL employment within a certain time period or for all employment listed chronologically then do so and don’t leave anything out.
if you are just listing jobs in a resume’ that is a different matter…
a resume’ is a highlight film not a documentary.
an application is a legal document that once signed is binding and you are answerable for it.
