How long does it take for a background check to complete?

I applied for a basic job at a supermarket in Manhattan on Monday August 25, went to a job interview on Thursday August 28. After the interview, the manager said I had the job, after the results for the drug and background check came in. I am 100% clean on both tests, so I’m wondering how long a background check takes to reach the employer. Because it’s making me nervous, and I don’t want to call the store if it takes a long time.

I am a recruiter and it can take anywhere from 24 hours all the way up to a week for a background check to clear. Believe it or not, there are several different background checks; some are only for the county you live in and some are extensive and include every county you have resided in. Also, keep in mind that Monday was a holiday and Saturday and Sunday don’t count as business days. They probably didn’t submit your drug test until the day after the interview, too.
    I hope this helps!
