What information shows up on a background check?

almost any past legal (even traffic tickets) or financial difficulties
and then they will explore your list of references
then from names gleaned in those steps
the net will expand (generally one or two more levels) where it will be explored in more detail
the final report (provided no legal or financial problems) is mostly about information turned up at that second level of search, and while it doesn’t turn up everything, it does turn up a whole lot, and it is difficult to predict, in advance, what piece of trivia might be missed

Almost all records that are filed under the public records database can be found via a COMPREHENSIVE background records check. For example, here is a legitimate online service that can let you conducting nationwide background check for under $5 (it’s on offer at a special low price at the moment).

In order to give you a more detailed answer, I would need to know more specifics on circumstances surrounding the background check being run. Based on you saying it is being done by the police, that means it is likely a criminal records check. This would entail them checking for any criminal record information (arrests, convictions, etc.) against national criminal databases. I doubt they would care much about things like address history, marital status, civil records (like bankduptcy filings, etc.)
